ChatGPT Pro and Business API credits: amounts, eligibility, the Business formula, and expiry

The short answer: since October 29, 2026, ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 subscriptions that have been active for at least 7 days can claim $100, $200, or $500 in API credits per monthly billing period. Eligible Business workspaces earn $20 per paid Standard seat and $100 per paid Premium seat, up to $500 per month. The credits work only in the linked API organization, do not increase ChatGPT or Codex limits, and unused credits do not roll over. Sources were reviewed on October 30, 2026.

What to know first

This benefit is neither a subscription refund nor ChatGPT usage. It is a separate grant of promotional credits to an API organization, which requires the same email on both accounts and the same person owning both. Plus, free trials, Enterprise, and Edu are not eligible. OpenAI says the benefit may change or be removed in the future.

How many API credits do ChatGPT Pro and Business include?

OpenAI's Help Center lists API credits per monthly billing period for each plan. Pro amounts match the tier name; Business adds up per paid seat with a workspace cap. The API docs also state a maximum of $500 per billing cycle.

Which subscriptions are eligible, and which are not?

Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500, and eligible Business workspaces with paid Standard or Premium seats qualify. The paid subscription must have been active for at least 7 days before you claim.

Plus, free-trial subscriptions, Enterprise, Edu, and legacy Codex seats are not eligible; the API docs add that complimentary subscriptions do not qualify. The Help Center also says availability depends on the enabled cohort and country, so a missing option in your account does not necessarily mean the rules are wrong. See ChatGPT subscription and API billing.

How are Business workspace API credits calculated?

Business credits add up per paid seat and are then capped at $500 per month. Both examples below come from OpenAI's Help Center and can be recomputed directly.

Business workspaces billed annually upfront receive the full year's grant at once, capped at $6,000 per annual cycle. The first grant is prorated for the time remaining and expires at the end of that cycle.

Monthly Business API credits = min($20 × paid Standard seats + $100 × paid Premium seats, $500)

Example 1: 5 Standard + 3 Premium = $100 + $300 = $400

Example 2: 10 Standard + 4 Premium = $200 + $400 = $600, above the cap, so $500 is granted

How do you claim them, and what are the linking rules?

  • Your ChatGPT account and API account must use the same email address.
  • Pro: the subscription owner must also own the API organization. Business: the person claiming must own both the workspace and the API organization; an admin role alone is not enough.
  • The person claiming needs billing-management permission; a Personal API Organization can be used.
  • One subscription links to one API organization, and an API organization can have only one active link at a time.
  • Where to claim: Pro under Settings → Billing in ChatGPT; Business in workspace billing or the Admin Console; or from Billing in the API platform. You activate once, and later grants arrive automatically on renewal.
  • No API payment method is required, and promotional credits are used before purchased credits.

Which APIs do the credits cover, and what is excluded?

OpenAI lists Responses, Chat Completions, Agents, Decisions, GPT-Live and Realtime, Images, and built-in tools. When the credits run out, the API returns HTTP 429 with `credit_balance_exhausted`; to keep going, buy paid credits or set up Auto Recharge. A credit balance does not remove request-rate, token-rate, model, organization, or project limits.

Do the credits expire? What happens when you upgrade, downgrade, or get a refund?

Monthly grants expire at the end of the billing cycle, and unused credits do not roll over. Later grants arrive automatically on renewal based on the eligible plan at that time, as long as the benefit remains available; OpenAI says it may change or be removed in the future.

Upgrade Pro or add Business seatsExtra prorated credits are granted

What should you keep in mind when counting API credits toward subscription cost?

The following is AISub's guidance, not an official statement. API credits are only worth something if you would have spent that money on the API anyway; if you do not call the API, they do not lower what you pay for ChatGPT. A safer approach is to subtract only the smaller of your expected API spend and the credits available that month.

Anthropic's pricing page also lists $100 and $200 in monthly API credits for Claude Max 5x and Max 20x, so the same formula works when comparing the two. AISub's price pages show each subscription's local-currency price and tax labels by region. See regional ChatGPT subscription quotes.

Reference net subscription cost = monthly price − min(API spend you would have had anyway, API credits available that month)

Example: Pro 200 costs $200 and you usually spend about $80/month on the API, so the reference net cost = $200 − min($80, $200) = $120

Example: the same Pro 200 with no API usage gives $200 − min($0, $200) = $200

Why can't I see the option to claim in my account?

Common reasons: the subscription has been active for less than 7 days, the plan is not eligible, the ChatGPT and API accounts use different emails, you do not own the API organization, or the benefit is not yet enabled for your cohort or country.
